Do developing countries need frequent elections?

Elections are part of the democracy.  To check the pulse of the public as well as the voters,  elections are important for any democratic country.   Both developed and developing countries conduct the elections. It may a small council election or president election but there is huge money spend for each and every election.  Developed countries simply can effort this cost but for the developing countries it is kind of financial burden.

Let’s take Sri Lanka, we have Local council election, Provincial council election, Parliament election and presidential election. These elections are conduct once in every five years. We are a small, developing country with almost 21 million people. Do we actually need this much of elections? For each and every election government needs to print ballet papers, putting officers to the voting and counting stations have to provide transport for the election duties. so, we have to think how much money goes for this purpose. This same theory will applicable to other developing countries as well. Other than that, to monitor the election there must be both local and international monitoring groups will involve.

There is another side as well. When there is a problem with the ruling party, election is the only way to eliminate them and putting the right people on that position. So, in that case, it is unavoidable situation. It is better to spend for the election rather handover more than that amount to corrupted politicians.

So according to my opinion, elections should be limited. If we take Sri Lanka, we do not need provincial council election. Because most of the works handle by the provincial council can be manage with our local councils. In fact, even the Chief minister of the particular provincial council, is under the Governor, who is appointed by the president.  Now almost four years past without provincial council elections but there is no impact.

Another important fact is people have to choose the right people when they have an opportunity to vote. so, it will help to re elections before the actual period end. So, it will help to stop unnecessary money spend for repeated elections. I think this concept will suits for each and every developing country.
